Adoption Process
HSNT's adoption fee for cats and dogs range from $50.00 to $150.00. This helps to offset the cost for the spay/neuter procedure and vaccinations. Some animals require an additional $100.00 or more cash deposit that is fully refundable. The Humane Society of North Texas adoption fee for dogs and cats include:
- Dog vaccinations (DA2LPPv) - (Canine distemper, hepatitis-adenovirus type 2, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus), Intra-Trac II bordatella (kennel cough)
- Cat vaccinations - FVRC/P (Feline rhinotracheitis, calici, panelukopenia, chlamydia psittaci)
- Strongid T dewormer for hook & roundworms
- Rabies vaccination
- Heartworm test for all dogs over six-months (Direct & Occult Test for Microfilaria)
- Spay and Neuter services
- Ear cleaning
- ID tag, microchip, and leash or cardboard cat carrier
Please note: We do our best to screen the animals we have available for adoption; however, there is always a chance that the animal is incubating a disease at the time of admission without showing any signs. If so, the vaccinations it received at admission would be ineffective in combating the disease.
It is the responsibility of the adopter to make an appointment with a participating veterinarian within five days of adoption, advising that they have adopted from the Humane Society of North Texas.
Dogs six months and older have received an occult heartworm test and are identified as being negative or positive. For those that are positive, HSNT's counselors will discuss treatment options available; and for those that are negative, we ask that you contact your veterinarian to begin heartworm preventative.
In most cases Cats have not been tested for Feline Leukemia nor vaccinated for Feline Infectious Peritonitis. Adopters should request these from your Veterinarian.
Adoptable animals are held as long as health, behavior and cage space permits. There is no standard set time for adoptable animals to find their permanent homes.
After selecting an animal, potential adopters will need to complete an adoption application to be reviewed by an adoption counselor. Please be aware that all potential adopters will need to meet the following requirements to be considered as an adopter:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Have current idenfication showing your present address
- Possess the knowledge and consent of all adults living in the household
- Be able and willingly spend time and money necessary to provide the training, medical treatment and proper care for the companion animal
- Understand that HSNT has the right to deny or approve your adoption application
- Understand that HSNT will retain the application in our files
- Cash for the adoption fee or check with a valid Texas drivers license
